Tips for Resume Writing
Writing your resume can be a challenge for even the smartest person. Remember though, nobody knows you better then you do. Here are a few tips to help you write the best possible resume:
- Be neat - nobody likes a sloppy resume!
- Use bullet lists - employers like to be able to scan through qualifications quickly.
- Use keywords - this is effective when someone is scanning your resume. These words will pop out at them.
- Use a header - employers don’t want to search your resumes when they want to contact you. Make your name, address and phone number easily visible.
- Write a cover letter - do this for each job that you are applying for even if the jobs are within the same company. Your cover letter should be tailored for each position.
- Organize your resume - include education, employment and references.
- Focus on your skills and accomplishments - this is a good time to be vane. Remember, it is ok to toot your own horn on your resume. Now is the time to shine!
- Delete anything controversial - do not include religious or political organizations unless you are applying for a job in this field.
- Use off-white fancy resume paper - many stores carry resume paper, if you don’t have any you will need to pick some up. You want your resume to be more attractive than the rest.
- Keep it brief - do not ramble on and on. Make your resume clear and to the point. Your resume should never be more than 2 pages long.
- Do not put a picture of yourself on your resume.
- Do not use scented paper or spray cologne or perfume on your resume. This is the quickest way to get it thrown in the trash!
- Spell Check - Make sure there are no typos or errors on your resume.
- Make it attractive - use a nice layout and font to make your resume eye-catching yet readable.
- Use Word - Microsoft Word has a great resume template. Use this to create a nicely formatted resume.
If you follow these guidelines, as well as be honest about your skills and abilities, you should be able to write a fine resume and hopefully land that dream job!
