Salary Negotiation Tips

Some tips for responding to the salary negotiation question:

  • Respond to salary requirement question positively without stating specific amounts.
  • Mention your desired salary, and mention that salary is negotiable depending upon the position or giving a $3-5,000 range
  • Know your salary requirements as well as what you hope to make.
  • Be prepared to respond to a request for previous salaries in an interview. Avoid specific amounts if at all possible.
  • Prepare a list of your positions for your own reference, the list should include name of each company or organization, your position title, your compensation, and a brief description of your position.
  • Look at recent salary surveys, talk to others working in your field, and find out what other people are paid for doing the same work.
  • When going through a salary negotiation you aren't likely to get the exact amount you want. You will have to compromise. Try to figure out how much you are willing to compromise and what you will do if the employer doesn't offer something you agree to.

Always be vague, and remember that it is a negotiation. Give and take on both sides. If you don't get what you want, don't give up. Keep trying.
